Report: Stars to hire Ruff

The Dallas Stars hired Lindy Ruff as their new head coach, completing an extensive search that led to the longtime Buffalo Sabres bench boss.

Stars President Jim Lites told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram of the team's plans, barring anything unforeseen. Ruff has been a possibility since the job opened. He guided the Sabres for 15 seasons until he was fired midway through this season.

Stars General Manager Jim Nill had reportedly been turned down by former Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault, who went to the New York Rangers. Ex-Rangers coach John Tortorella was also considered.

Ruff compiled a record of 571-432-78 record as coach of the Sabres, reached the Conference finals four times. They played in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1999, losing to the Stars on a controversial goal.
