Report: Spikes' lateness part of IR decision

The SportsXchange

The New England Patriots placed linebacker Brandon Spikes on injured reserve earlier this week in part to punish him for being late to a meeting, ESPN.com reported Saturday.

Spikes has battled a knee injury for several weeks and the team put him on IR Monday, meaning he is out for the season. The Patriots host the Indianapolis Colts in an AFC divisional playoff Saturday night.

Despite being the top-ranked run-stopping linebacker in the NFL this season by Pro Football Focus, the team reportedly punished Spikes for his tardiness to a meeting.

Spikes, 26, played in all 16 regular-season games (12 starts) in 2013 and was second on the team with 134 tackles. He has 384 tackles in 51 career NFL games (40 starts). He also has 45 tackles in six postseason games.
