Tulowitzki out 4-6 weeks with broken rib

The SportsXchange

An MRI performed Thursday revealed that Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has a broken rib on his right side, multiple media outlets reported.

Tulowitzki is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, MLB.com reported.

"I'm just really upset, I worked so hard (to get back)," Tulowitzki said in a text message to the Denver Post. "I'm in a lot of pain right now; I'm not sure how long (I'll be out). "It's just an unfortunate thing that happened. I will be back and be even better."

Tulowitzki left Thursday's 5-4 loss to Washington after making a diving stop of a ground ball in the eighth inning. Tulowitzki had trouble breathing immediately after suffering the injury, the Post reported. He has had soreness in the rib area for a few days, but it did not prevent him from playing.

"The ribs have been a lingering problem for him. When he came off the field, it was very evident he was done," manager Walt Weiss told the Post.

Tulowitzki ranks in the top five in the National League in hitting (.347 average), on-base percentage (.413), home runs (16) and RBIs (51).

Tulowitzki missed the final four months of the 2012 season following a left groin injury that required surgery.

Rockies outfielders Carlos Gonzalez (bruised left foot) and Dexter Fowler (swollen knuckle on right ring finger) are also injured although neither is expecte to miss much time.
