Report: Rangers sign C Arencibia

The SportsXchange

The Texas Rangers signed catcher J.P. Arencibia to a one-year deal, the Dallas Morning News reported Friday.

The Rangers had been offering Arencibia a contract worth about $1 million, according to CBC Sports.

Arencibia, 27, was the Toronto Blue Jays starting catcher the past three seasons. But the Blue Jays opted not to offer him a new contract after the season, making him a free agent.

He may not be able to beat out Geovany Soto for the starting job with the Rangers.

Arencibia hit just .194 for the Blue Jays in 2013, although he did hit 21 home runs in 138 games.

Soto, 30, hit .245 with nine homers in 54 games for Texas this past season. Soto is also considered the better defensive catcher.
