Report: Rams will hire Lions' Walton to be DC
A man with no experience as a coordinator apparently beat out two former head coaches for the St. Louis Rams' defensive coordinator position.
Passing on Mike Singletary and Dick Jauron, the Rams will give the job to Tim Walton, ESPN.com reported Tuesday night.
Walton has served as the Detroit Lions' secondary coach since 2009. His prior experience was on the college level, including a year as the University of Memphis' defensive coordinator in 2008.
The Rams also interviewed Singletary, the former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers who is currently the Minnesota Vikings' linebackers coach, and Jauron, a former head coach of the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills who spent the past two seasons as the Cleveland Browns' defensive coordinator.
St. Louis was close to giving the defensive coordinator position to Rob Ryan before Rams head coach Jeff Fisher and Ryan reportedly had a difference of opinion over the use of a 4-3 scheme. On Saturday, Ryan was hired to be the New Orleans Saints' defensive coordinator.
The Rams have not had a defensive coordinator since Gregg Williams was suspended by the NFL before the 2012 season. Williams was reinstated from his suspension last week, and the Tennessee Titans hired him as a defensive senior assistant.
