Report: Players would resist offseason schedule changes

The SportsXchange

The NFL Players' Association is not in favor of possible changes to the league's offseason calendar that would include moving the scouting combine to March and the draft to May, according to a report.

The league is considering an April start for free agency in addition to moving the combine from February to March and the draft from April to May to give it a news event in the three months after the Super Bowl, ESPN reported Thursday.

But the NFLPA wouldn't be on board because it would push the offseason further into the summer, according to a report by USA Today on Friday. The NFLPA has not officially commented on the subject.

John Elway, executive vice president of football operations for the Denver Broncis, was taking a wait-and-see approach.

"The bottom line is we'll adjust however the league office decides to go with the schedule." he said. "No matter whether free agency is March 12 or April 12 or May 12, until we get out there and things start getting closer to that date and things get refined, it's going to be hard to put that big picture together."

The start of the league year, which is March 12 in 2013, is determined by the collective bargaining agreement.

"The season structure and year-round calendar are analyzed and discussed every year," league spokesman Greg Aiello told USA Today in an email. "There is nothing more to it than that at this point."
