Report: Pettitte considers retiring again

New York Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte, who made a successful comeback this season, is considering re-retiring, according to ESPNNewYork.com.

"I know I want to make (a decision) as quick as I can," Pettitte said Thursday after the Yankees were eliminated in the American League Championship Series, the website reported. "I would like to know. Hopefully, I can come to a conclusion in a month or so."

Pettitte, 40, sat out the 2011 season, then rejoined the Yankees in May after working back into shape in the minors at the start of this season. He wound up going 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 12 starts, striking out 69 and walking 21 in 75 1/3 innings. Pettitte went 0-1 with a 3.29 ERA in two postseason starts.

The veteran missed 12 weeks after suffering a broken bone in his lower left leg on June 27 when struck by a line drive. Returning to action in mid-September, he threw 11 shutout innings over his first two starts back to beat the Toronto Blue Jays and the Minnesota Twins.

Pettitte won five championships in his 17 years in the major leagues, and he reached eight World Series, including one with the Houston Astros.

He has a career 245-142 record with a 3.86 ERA in 501 career games (491 starts). Pettite made three All-Star Games, and he was the All-Star MVP in 2001.
