    Report: Patriots, Welker closer to deal

    The New England Patriots and wide receiver Wes Welker are making progress on a new contract, CSN New England reported Monday.

    If the two sides do not work out a deal, Welker could have a franchise tag of $11.4 million. The deadline to franchise players is 4 p.m. ET.

    Right tackle Sebastian Vollmer and cornerback Aqib Talib are also candidates to be franchised. Vollmer's franchise tag would be for $9.8 million and Talib $10.85 million.

    Welker made 118 catches for 1,454 yards with six touchdowns in 2012.
