Report: Patriots will not franchise Welker

National Football Post

The New England Patriots will not franchise wide receiver Wes Welker, says the Boston Herald's Ron Borges in his column.

Once again franchising Welker, who was tagged in 2012, would cost the Patriots $11.4 million for the 32-year-old receiver. The Patriots' usual thinking with players is not to open up the checkbook for those they feel are either on the downside of their career or heading in that direction age-wise.

Borges points out that players like Deion Branch, Asante Samuel and Richard  Seymour all played hard ball in negotiations with the Patriots and wound up elsewhere. Welker did not, sticking it out in New England, but now may be headed out the door anyway.
