Report: Panthers fear Stewart has torn MCL

The SportsXchange

The Carolina Panthers believe that running back Jonathan Stewart has a torn MCL in his right knee, according to ESPN.

Stewart was scheduled to have an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of his injury, which he sustained during the third quarter of Sunday night's 31-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The team initially announced the injury as a contusion but later said it could be worse. Coach Ron Rivera would not speculate on the nature of the injury.

Stewart was hit on the knee by Saints cornerback Keenan Lewis following a 16-yard reception. After getting up slowly, Stewart limped off the field and did not return to the game.

Stewart spent the first eight weeks of the season on the physically unable to perform list after having offseason surgery on both ankles. He has 48 rushes for 180 yards and seven catches for 44 yards this season.
