Report: Packers nearing deal for Clay Matthews

National Football Post

Much of the offseason focus in Green Bay has been on the team’s efforts to get quarterback Aaron Rodgers secured for the long haul with a contract extension.

But the Packers have also been working in similar fashion to keep outside linebacker Clay Matthews in place, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports a deal is nearing. Per Schefter, when Matthews has new paper, he will earn an average of more than $13 million per season in new money. That would eclipse top pay at the position.

The 26-year-old has 42 ½ sacks for Green Bay over the previous four seasons and is entering the final year of his contract. The Packers are notorious for avoiding spending in free agency but Green Bay does believe in taking care of its own. Rodgers and Matthews would be examples of that, and reports are that Rodgers could be close to a new contract that would make him the highest-paid player in the game.
