Report: NFL plans delay if blizzard strikes Super Bowl

The SportsXchange

It was 23 degrees with the windchill factor at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. when Super Bowl XLVII kicked off in the climate-controlled Superdome in New Orleans.

The NFL is prepared for cold, but contingency plans are being made for how to respond to ominous weather forecasts that might include ice, snow or blizzard conditions when the Super Bowl is played Feb. 2, 2014 -- outdoors at Giants Stadium.

According to Sports Business Journal, the league is weighing appropriate response action to a severe weather event like the nor'easter that dumped more than two feet of snow in the Boston area last weekend.

The NFL won't eliminate the possibility of rescheduling its billion-dollar extravaganza in the name of safety, and could opt to play the game Saturday if a major storm is expected Super Bowl Sunday. There's an equal chance the game could be moved back a day to Monday.

Complications involved with changing the game date as a reactionary response to the weather forecast are several. The league has weighed how to inform fans holding tickets to the game of potential delays that might not be known until the week of the game, when travel arrangements, including flights and hotel accomodations, have long been set.
