Report: Nebraska's Martinez to start at QB

The SportsXchange

After missing three games with turf toe, Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez is expected to start Saturday at Minnesota, ESPN reported Friday night.

Martinez returned to practice this week as the No. 24 Cornhuskers (5-1, 2-0) prepared to face the Gophers (5-2, 1-2) in Minneapolis. Nebraska is coming off a bye week.

While Martinez was out, freshman Tommy Armstrong stepped in at quarterback and led Nebraska to three victories.

Before Martinez was injured, he threw nine touchdown passes with one interception in the first three games of the season.

Nebraska coach Bob Pelini said Thursday that Martinez, a four-year starter, will be evaluated before the game.

"Taylor has practiced, and has had his fair share of reps this week. We will see how it (turf toe) responds after today and a week of practicing," Pelini said. "It will be a game-time decision of what we are going to do, but I would anticipate he is going to play. How much, we will see. We are playing it by ear for how he feels and how he wakes up tomorrow."
