The New York Mets agreed to a contract with free agent outfielder Rick Ankiel, CBS Sports reported Monday.
Ankiel was recently released by the Houston Astros after hitting just .194 with five homers in 25 games.
The Mets' outfield has been largely unproductive this season. When asked about the outfield during the offseason, general manager Sandy Alderson said "What outfield?" Mike Baxter, Marlon Byrd, Colin Cowgill, Lucas Duda and Jordany Valdespin have played in the Mets outfield this season.
The Mets' .691 OPS is 24th in the major leagues.
Ankiel, the 33-year-old pitcher-turned-outfielder, should provide home-run-hitting ability and athleticism to the lineup.
