Report: Matt Cassel 'destined to be released soon' by Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel is "destined to be released soon," according to USA Today.
Cassel has spent the last four seasons with the Chiefs, but a fifth season doesn't appear in the cards for two reasons: First, he had a terrible 2012 campaign and, second, he's due $7.5 million if he remains with the team for the upcoming season.
Cassel started the season as the Chiefs' No. 1 quarterback, but was benched after Week 7, finishing the season just 1-7 and completing just six touchdowns while being intercepted twice that amount.. His 66.7 quarterback rating was 32nd in the league.
New Chiefs coach Andy Reid has said little about Cassel's status or future with the team. Reid has already publicly expressed interest in both San Francisco 49ers backup QB Alex Smith and Nick Foles, who played for Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Because Reid is expected to call offensive plays this season, he'll likely want to surround himself with a starting quarterback of his own choosing, rather than a holdover like Cassel.
Brady Quinn, who took over for Cassel as the Chiefs' starting QB last season, also finishing with a 1-7 record, is expected to file for free agency next month and will likely not re-sign with the Chiefs.
