Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Malone will be the next head coach of the Sacramento Kings, according to multiple reports.
The Kings have reached an agreement with Malone, 42, on a four-year deal in excess of $9 million that includes a team option in the fourth season, ESPN.com and Yahoo! Sports reported Thursday.
The Kings are expected to make an official announcement on Friday after software magnate Vivek Ranadive finalizes the purchase of the team. Ranadive was a minority owner of the Warriors.
Malone will replace Keith Smart, who he said was informed several days ago that he would not be retained as coach. The Kings finished 28-54 this year and were 48-93 in Smart's two seasons. Smart, 48, had one year remaining on his contract.
Malone has been with the Warriors since 2011. The son of longtime NBA assistant Brendan Malone was on the New Orleans coaching staff before coming to Golden State and also served as the lead assistant for coach Mike Brown with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
