Report: Kershaw, Dodgers nearing extension

The SportsXchange

Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly nearing a contract extension worth as much as $180 million.

The 25-year-old southpaw and the Dodgers have been in this territory before. In the final week of spring training, Kershaw said he felt a deal could be done but wanted to cease negotiations during the season.

Kershaw has a 1.84 ERA with 104 strikeouts in 107 1/3 innings this season. He's 5-4, but the Dodgers' ragtag bullpen hasn't helped him.

Kershaw's deal, first reported by Ken Rosenthal and Fox Sports, could be a $180 million, seven-year deal with incentives. That's in the range of Felix Hernandez's contract -- seven years, $175 million -- signed in spring training. Hernandez, 27, is 8-4 this season. He'll be 34 when his new contract expires.
