Free agent infielder Jeff Keppinger recently had surgery to repair a small break in his right fibula, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reported.
According to the report, Keppinger suffered the fracture to his lower leg when he tripped down stairs at his house.
Keppinger is hoping to be ready to return by mid-January, well ahead of the start of spring training.
It's unclear whether the injury will affect Keppinger's status on the free-agent market.
Keppinger, 32, is coming off his best season in the majors. He hit .325 for the Rays in 2012.
