Report: Jeter runs bases without a problem

Derek Jeter moved a step closer to returning to the New York Yankees' lineup by running the bases without any problems on Thursday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas, MLB.com reported.

Jeter, who is recovering from a strained quad, has said that he wants to be activated for Saturday's game against the Rays. Yankees manager Joe Girardi is not sure Jeter will return then, however.

"I don't feel it, so that's good," Jeter said of his quad injury after Thursday's workout, according to the report. "Whatever they tell me, man. I think I can play today. I do what I'm told. I'll go inside and see what we have tomorrow."

Jeter baserunning routine included trips from first base to third base and from second base to home plate. Conditioning coach Dana Cavalea observed the workout.

Jeter also took a round of batting practice, and did some fielding drills as well.

"I feel good," Jeter said. "That's the only thing I can say; I feel good. I don't feel [pain in] my leg, which is good. Now, it's up to them. I don't know what they have planned."

Girardi has not ruled out the possibility of Jeter returning Saturday, but he was not overly optimistic about the possibility either.

"The one thing that you can't do is say, 'Well, he's definitely going to be there,' and then when he's not there, all these flags go up," Girardi said. "Let's see how today goes, then we'll see how tomorrow goes, then we'll go from there."
