New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is likely to have surgery on his broken left ankle, ESPN.com reported Sunday, based on information from a league source. A CT scan and MRI confirmed on Sunday that the ankle was broken. Surgery would be required if there was ligament damage in addition to the fracture. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said on Sunday he believes Jeter's previous foot injuries influenced Jeter's footwork on the play that resulted in his broken ankle on Saturday. Girardi acknowledged that Jeter had received a cortisone injection to enable him to continue playing after sustaining the bone bruise in early September. Jeter will visit foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C., sometime this week.
