Report: Jags assistant coaches allowed to job hunt

The SportsXchange

Assistant coaches for the Jacksonville Jaguars reportedly have been given permission to look for other jobs despite the fact that coach Mike Mularkey has yet to be fired.

While the entire staff is still under contract, the assistant coaches are allowed to job hunt because the team is expected to hire a new coach after it hires a new general manager, according to the Jacksonville Times-Union.

"Realistically, if I was a betting man, I'd say (we're gone)," a Jaguars assistant coach told the Times-Union. "I don't think there's any other way you can look at it, and I'm an eternal optimist."

The coaching staff is scheduled to return Wednesday after a week-long vacation. Mularky has asked new owner Shad Kahn about their status, but has yet to receive a definitive answer.

"I guess Shad was non-committal," the staff member said. "Mike had to let Shad know that by doing this (delaying), he's hurting our opportunities to get other jobs."

The source said Mularky is holding a "glimmer of hope" for his job as Kahn continues to interview general manager candidates.

So far, he has talked to New York Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross, David Caldwell and Tom Gamble, the director of player personnel for Atlanta and San Francisco, respectively.
