Hofstra University will announce Niagara University's Joe Mihalich as its new basketball coach at a press conference on Wednesday, according to a source with knowledge of the hiring.
The source told SI.com that Mihalich signed a contract while visiting the Hofstra campus on Tuesday. Mihalich was reportedly given a six-year contract, but the terms were not disclosed.
Mihalich, 56, has the most basketball coaching wins the history of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. In 15 years at Niagara, he finished with a 265-203 record and led the Purple Eagles to two NCAA tournaments berths. Mihalich was named the MAAC coach of the year this year after guiding the Purple Eagles to the conference regular-season title.
Meanwhile, Hofstra has not reached the NCAA tournament since 2001. Third-year coach Mo Cassara was fired in March after a 7-25 record and the arrest of six players for off-court incidents this season.
