Report: Flacco will play Unitas in movie

The SportsXchange

The current championship quarterback of the NFL team from Baltimore will play a former championship quarterback from Baltimore in a movie being filmed this summer.

Joe Flacco, the reigning Super Bowl MVP for the Ravens, will play the late Baltimore Colts legend Johnny Unitas in "Unitas We Stand," a film co-written by Unitas' son, the Baltimore Sun reported Saturday.

The movie, based on Tom Callahan's best-seller, "Johnny U: The Life and Times of Johnny Unitas," will tell the story of the Colts' 1958 championship win over the New York Giants, and Flacco will appear as Unitas in the final scenes.

"Obviously, the Baltimore ties are very important to me," Unitas' son, Joe, told the Sun. "I think it's great that Joe just won the Super Bowl with the Ravens and was Most Valuable Player in the game. A lot of the way Joe plays and his demeanor remind me a lot of my dad. He's not a rah-rah guy. He throws a touchdown and maybe there's a little fist pump. ... (Flacco) does things the right way and is a good role model for kids and he gets what hard work is and does everything he can for the team. There are a lot of parallels that can be drawn between Joe and my dad."

The movie will be filmed this summer, and Flacco's part will be wrapped up by the time the Ravens report for training camp.

In a statement on the film's website, Flacco said, "I'm excited and honored by the opportunity to play Johnny Unitas."
