Report: Female official could work Rams-Lions opener

National Football Post

Barring a breakthrough no one can say with any confidence will happen at this point, the NFL will begin the season with replacement officials on the field.

That means that Shannon Eastin could become the first female to work on an officiating crew in NFL history.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that Eastin could work the season opener between the Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams on Sunday at Ford Field. XTRA Sports 910 in Phoenix reported that Eastin has been assigned to the game as a line judge, although complete officiating assignments have not been publicly made at this point.

“We trust the league to do what’s right and we’re going to be all right with it,” Lions linebacker Justin Durant said, per Birkett. “We’ve got full faith in the league and the refs are going to be all right.”
