Report: Eagles pick Billy Davis to run defense

National Football Post

Chip Kelly has turned to former Cleveland Browns coaches to fill the two top spots on his coaching staff.

It’s been known that Kelly tabbed Pat Shurmur, the former Browns coach, to be his offensive coordinator. CSN Philly reports that Billy Davis, an assistant under Shurmur in Cleveland, will be the team’s defensive coordinator.

Davis has been a coordinator before spending two years in the role with the Arizona Cardinals and two years running the defense of the San Francisco 49ers. He’s also made stops with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants. Davis will become the fifth defensive coordinator in six seasons for the Eagles.

Per the report, Davis’ father Bill worked in the Eagles front office in 1988 and 1989. Davis, 47, was a ball boy for the team when Dick Vermeil was head coach.

Davis, who has experience with 3-4 and 4-3 defenses, was originally interviewed for the job on Jan. 28.
