Fantasy Football 2014:

Ducks deal Penner to Caps

The SportsXchange

Left winger Dustin Penner is headed to the Washington Capitals in a deal with the Anaheim Ducks.

The Ducks will receive a fourth-round draft pick in return, TSN reported. That pick was obtained on Sept. 29 by the Capitals from Anaheim in a trade for center Mathieu Perreault.

Penner's one-year, $2 million contract will expire at the end of the season and he will become an unrestricted free agent in July.

The playoff-experienced Penner, who missed time earlier this season with a concussion, scored 13 goals and 32 points in 49 games for the Ducks this season.

"I look forward to coming in and hopefully adding something they were looking for," Penner said.

The 6-foot-4, 247-pound Penner is expected to join the Capitals before their game on Wednesday night against the Philadelphia Flyers. He potentially could be added to the Capitals' top line with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.

The Capitals are fighting for a playoff spot. They were ninth in the Eastern Conference standings entering Tuesday's games and in danger of missing the postseason for the first time since 2007.

In eight NHL seasons, the 31-year-old Penner has played for the Ducks, Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings and been a part of two Stanley Cup-winning teams.
