Report: Cubs to interview Acta, bid for Girardi

The Chicago Cubs are being proactive in their search for a new manager.

They reportedly will try to outbid the New York Yankees for the services of Joe Girardi, but in the meantime, they plan to interview former Washington Nationals and Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta, CSNChicago.com reported.

Acta and A.J. Hinch are known candidates to replace Dale Sveum, and CSNChicago.com reports that Padres bench coach Rick Renteria also may be interviewed for the vacancy.

But none is likely to be hired until the Cubs determine whether they can lure Girardi from the Yankees.

The Chicago Tribune reported the Cubs are "willing to top whatever offer" Girardi gets from the Yankees.

Girardi is under contract with the Yankees until November 1, and the Yankees have not granted him permission to speak to teams before then.
