Report: Coyotes G Smith signs 6-year extension

The Phoenix Coyotes signed goalie Mike Smith to a six-year contract extension, Fox Sports Arizona reported Sunday.

No financial terms were released, but earlier reports pegged the deal is in the $5.5 million to $5.7 million per year range. The Arizona Republic reported that the cap hit for the Coyotes will be $5.67 million.

Because the team is owned by the NHL, the deal needs approval from the league before it is finalized. Smith was set to become a unrestricted free agent on Friday.

The 31-year-old Smith posted a 15-12-5 record with a 2.58 goals-agaainst average, a .910 save percentage and five shutouts during the lockout-shortened 2013 season.

The previous season was one of Smith's best in the NHL. He was 38-18-10 in 2011-12 with an 2.21 GAA, a .930 save percentage and eight shutsouts in a career-high 67 regular-season games as the Coyotes reached the Western Conference finals.
