Cowboys reach agreement with G Waters

The SportsXchange

The Dallas Cowboys agreed to terms on a one-year deal with guard Brian Waters, the team announed Tuesday.

The contract could pay Waters up to $3 million, including a $1.5 million base salary.

Waters, a six-time Pro Bowl selection, has started 165 NFL games, including all 16 regular-season games and two playoff games for the New England Patriots in 2011.

He sat out last season, and has been discussing a possible contract with the Cowboys since July.

At one point Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team had moved on regarding Waters. But the Cowboys have a need for an interior offensive lineman. Nate Livings is out for the season following knee surgery, and Ronald Leary is questionable for Sunday night's season opener with a knee problem.

Presumably, it will take Waters a couple weeks to work his way back into playing shape, but he may push for a starting job when he's ready.
