How far apart are Cliff Avril and the Detroit Lions?
Far enough to not be close.
According to Albert Breer of NFL.com, the promising defensive end who has been secured with the franchise tag would like an average annual salary greater than the current tender of $10.605 million. He’d like it over four years with more than half of the deal guaranteed. That means roughly $42 million over four years.
Well, per Breer, the Lions aren’t within $2 million of that request on an annual basis. Can the gap be bridged? The sides have until July 16 to construct a multi-year deal. The Lions freed up badly needed cap space earlier this offseason when they signed wide receiver Calvin Johnson to a long-term deal.
The Lions have made multiple offers to Avril. We’ll see if the deadline brings them closer together in the coming weeks.
