Report: Cavaliers contact Phil Jackson

The SportsXchange

The Cleveland Cavaliers have contacted Phil Jackson to gauge his interest in becoming their head coach, ESPN.com reported Sunday.

The Cavs fired coach Byron Scott last Thursday, and last week, it was reported that Jackson might be interested in a return to the NBA next season, preferably in a management capacity.

Jackson interviewed with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert in 2005, when Gilbert was looking for a coach. The Cavs ended up hiring Mike Brown on that occasion.

Brown is candidate again this time, and Cleveland television station WKYC reported Brown and Gilbert planned to meet over the weekend.

It's unclear whether Jackson would be interested in the Cavs' coaching vacancy.

Jackson also may have opportunities with the Brooklyn Nets or the Sacramento Kings, if they move to Seattle.

Jackson is believed to be looking for situation similar to the one Pat Riley has with the Miami Heat. That would involve overseeing personnel moves and mentoring a head coach.
