Report: Carmelo Anthony played with partial tear in shoulder

The SportsXchange

New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony was hindered for the final 12 games he played this past season by a partially torn left shoulder, according to numerous media reports.

First reported by the New York Daily News, the story cited an unnamed Knicks source who said an MRI of Anthony's shoulder showed a partially torn labrum in the shoulder. While surgery is an option, the team reportedly has asked Anthony to rest the shoulder for up to the next month to see if the injury heals on its own.

If Anthony needs surgery, he could be out for up to five months, which potentially could affect his ability to start training camp in October.

Anthony played the final dozen games clearly in pain. The injury is believed to have occurred in an April 14 game against the Indiana Pacers. He then aggravated the injury in Game 5 of the Knicks' opening playoff series against the rival Boston Celtics.

The Knicks had not issued any statement as of Wednesday night. Anthony told reporters Monday that "I don't think it's any major damage. But we'll see. We'll find that out."

He also previously said of the injury, "It was bothering me since it happened. To be able to play with that and get through the pain, it just came to a point where you just try not to think about it. That's where I was at mentally."

He then added, "It's just a matter of resting it and letting it heal."
