Report: Broncos release LB Joe Mays

The Denver Broncos have released Joe Mays, an NFL.com report said Tuesday.

Mays was a surprise starter at middle linebacker for the Broncos in 2011, and he was given a contract extension after that season. A broken ankle and leg midway through last season cost him his starting job.

According to the report, Nate Irving is expected to start at middle linebacker and Steven Johnson should compete for the role.
