Report: Auburn football program probed over recruiting allegations

The SportsXchange

Auburn's football program is being investigated by the NCAA for possible recruiting violations.

According to a story that first appeared in Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday, the NCAA is probing the recruitment of players by Auburn assistant coaches Curtis Luper and Trooper Taylor. Both Luper and Taylor are reportedly not involved in current recruiting duties due to the investigation, but remain in their respective positions as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach (Taylor), and running backs and recruiting coordinator (Luper).

Auburn head football coach Gene Chizik has declined comment on both the investigation as well as if his two assistants are no longer recruiting players.

Al.com reported Wednesday that several players and at least one assistant coach were interviewed by NCAA investigators already this week.

Among players and their recruitment reportedly being scrutinized by investigators is running back Jovon Robinson, according to sources. One of Robinson's former high school teachers told ESPN that she was asked to change the grades of an Auburn football recruit, but she would not name the player or the teacher who made the request for a grade change. Robinson was declared academically ineligible after reports of the grade changing surfaced.

Robinson attended summer classes at Auburn, but has since withdrawn from the school and is back living with his mother in Memphis, according to the Yahoo! Sports report.

Auburn is 3-8 and Chizik's role of remaining as head coach will be determined at the end of the season, according to Auburn president Jay Gogue.

Chizik will not talk about the probe and said it is not a distraction as his team prepares for its Iron Bowl matchup with Alabama on Saturday..

"I'm not going to comment on any speculation out there," Chizik said, speaking to reporters in Alabama. "I will talk about the Iron Bowl and Alabama. ... We haven't thought one second about it (the probe). We're right down the line on the Iron Bowl."
