Report: Astros agree to deal with Appel

The SportsXchange

The Houston Astros agreed to a deal with Stanford pitcher Mark Appel, whom they took with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft.

CBS Sports reported Saturday that the deal is expected to be worth at least $6 million.

Appel, a native of Houston who went to high school in the San Francisco Bay Area, was happy the Astros drafted him.

"I'm coming home, I'm coming home! tell the world, I'm coming home," Appel wrote on Twitter June 6, right after he was selected.

He could be ready for the major leagues in a year.

Appel was taken eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates last year, but rejected their $3.3 million offer. Instead, he returned to Stanford for his senior year.

Appel went 10-4 with a 2.12 ERA with 130 strikeouts in 80 innings this year.

The Astros were slotted to spend up to $7.79 million for the No. 1 pick, so if they get Appel in the $6 million range, they have some wiggle room for bonus money.
