Report: 49ers trade QB Alex Smith to Chiefs

The 49ers have agreed to trade QB Alex Smith to the Chiefs, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer first reported. The deal is not official until the 2013 league year begins on March 12.

According to Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News, the 49ers will get a second-round pick in 2013 and a similar pick in the 2014 draft.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora first reported earlier in the week that the 49ers were telling teams that a trade was completed with the former No. 1 pick, but the other team was a mystery until Wednesday.

Smith will join new Chiefs head coach Andy Reid to run Kansas City’s offense — a unit that was 24th in total offense and last in passing last season. Matt Cassel is still under contract with the Chiefs, but is due $7.5 million in 2013 and $9 million in 2014. Cassel threw 12 interceptions and lost seven fumbles in eight starts in 2012.

Last season, Smith started the first nine games for San Francisco and threw 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. He had a passer rating of 104.1, but left in Week 10 with a concussion. Colin Kaepernick took over as the starter and remained at the helm for the rest of the season, leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

When Jim Harbaugh took over as the 49ers’ head coach, Smith’s career turned around for the better. The 28-year-old signalcaller threw 17 touchdowns and five interceptions while starting every game in 2011, leading the Niners to the NFC title game.

Reid and the Chiefs do hold the No. 1 pick in April’s draft, and this trade likely rules out selecting a quarterback. Glazer reported that the Chiefs made a “clear commitment” to Smith.
