The SportsXchange

Right-handed reliever Guillermo Mota announced his retirement after 14 seasons in the major leagues.

Mota, who did not pitch last year, was a non-roster spring training invitee of the Kansas City Royals.

Mota, 40, had a career 3.94 ERA over 743 big-league appearances with the Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants. He played on the Giants' World Series championship teams in 2010 and '12.

Mota led all National League relievers in innings pitched in 2003 and '04. He was suspended twice by Major League Baseball for performance-enhancing drugs. He was banned 50 games in 2007 while with the Mets and 100 games in 2012 with the Giants.
