Reis out five to seven months after quadriceps surgery

It's tough to imagine Matt Reis' 2013 campaign ending in more unenviable fashion.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper underwent surgery after suffering a torn quadriceps tendon in the dying moments of New England's season-ending defeat at Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday, sidelining Reis for five to seven months.

Reis appeared in 12 matches for New England in the regular season, as well as two playoff contests after unseating 26-year-old starter Bobby Shuttleworth late in the year.

After Claudio Bieler's extra-time goal put Kansas City ahead on aggregate in the teams' Eastern Conference semifinal series, Reis suffered the injury while playing the ball outside his box moments before the final whistle.
