This season, Regan Smith had been driving for Furniture Row Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series until two weeks ago. That was when Kurt Busch took over the driver's seat for the team. At first, it appeared that Smith would be headed to Phoenix Racing to replace Busch. Instead, it has been announced that Smith will be driving for JR Motorsports in the Nationwide Series. He will start racing with the team in the final race of the season on November 17, 2012 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. JR Motorsports already has sponsorship for the car Smith will be driving. The team is also hoping to get enough sponsorship to retain Cole Whitt as Smith's teammate. Danica Patrick, who currently drives for the team, will be moving up to the Sprint Cup Series.
Smith was able to fill in for Dale Earnhardt Jr. for two races. Earnhardt was out for two races due to a concussion. Smith had been considered for a job driving for Phoenix Racing but he opted to race in place of Earnhardt at Hendrick Motorsports. A.J. Allmendinger raced for Phoenix for those two races and he will be driving for the team in two more races. The remaining two races of the season will go to Smith. Allmendinger was reinstated after being suspended for testing positive for a banned substance.
It might be disappointing that he will be driving in the Nationwide Series once again but given the quality of the team he will be driving for, it might be a good thing for the driver. Fans watch to see their favorites win and drivers are generally competitive people. It would be disappointing to everyone if a driver were not in a competitive car. If he had not made the switch, he may have either ended up without a job or in a car that was not competitive. Hopefully, Smith will have a great 2013 season in the Nationwide Series. There is every chance that if Smith has a great showing in the Nationwide Series in 2013, he might be able to return to the Sprint Cup Series.
Kristin Watt has been a NASCAR Winston Cup, now Sprint Cup, fan for as long as she can remember starting way back when she was a little girl and her mother would sit on the couch with her every Sunday during the season to watch the races. Back then, they were fans of Bill Elliott and newcomer Davey Allison.
