Redskins to interview Panthers DC McDermott

Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will interview with the Washington Redskins for their vacant head coaching position, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday.

McDermott has been integral in crafting the Panthers' defense into one of the league's best.

McDermott, 39, is in third season with the Panthers after spending more than a decade in the Philadelphia Eagles' organization.

Carolina currently ranks near the top of the league in points and yards allowed, while generating a league-high 60 sacks in 2013.

Carolina (12-4) has a first-round bye before hosting a divisional-round game Jan. 12.

The interview with the Redskins will take place this weekend in Charlotte, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Mike Shanahan was fired Monday with a 24-40 record in four seasons.

General manager Bruce Allen indicated on Monday that he will assume much of the control over free agency and the draft that Shanahan had the past four years.

Allen said the Redskins will consider veteran NFL coaches and assistants as well as college coaches.
