Redskins FS Meriweather out for the season

Updated 11:48 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 20

Redskins FS Brandon Meriweather will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, head coach Mike Shanahan told reporters Monday.

The sixth-year veteran suffered the injury in Sunday’s win over the Eagles, which was his first game of the season. Meriweather had seven tackles, two passes defensed and one interception.

The injury occurred in Meriweather’s right knee. He had missed the first nine games of the regular season with a sprained MCL and PCL in his left knee.

Shanahan called the injury a “freak situation” since it was on a non-contact play. Meriweather, who has 13 career picks, signed a two-year contract with Washington in March.

On Tuesday, the Redskins placed Meriweather on injured reserve and signed CB Jerome Murphy. A third-round pick by the Rams in 2010, Murphy has appeared in three games this season — two with the Saints and one with the Lions, before being releaesd by Detroit on Sept. 29.
