Redskins add Jackson to safety competition
The Redskins' strength-in-numbers approach at safety continued Friday with the addition of Tanard Jackson.
Jackson played for Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris in Tampa Bay but the Buccaneers released him Tuesday for failing a physical coming off of shoulder surgery. He started 10 games in 2011.
The safety tandem that opened the 2011 season as starters for the Redskins, Oshiomogho Atogwe and LaRon Landry, won't return. Atogwe is a free agent, released by Washington after an injury-marred season and Landry signed a one-year deal with the Jets.
That leaves an open competition involving several veterans, including Reed Doughty and DeJon Gomes. The Redskins have also added Brandon Meriweather and Madieu Williams and have contemplated moving former cornerback Cedric Griffin, signed as a free agent away from the Vikings, to free safety.
Jackson was suspended for the 2010 season for repeat violations of the league's drug policy.
