World Cup 2014 coverage:

Reds RHP Latos has knee surgery

The SportsXchange

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Mat Latos had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee Friday.

Latos injured the knee earlier this week while throwing in Arizona. The Reds opened spring training in Goodyear on Friday.

Latos cannot throw for about 10 days while the knee heals.

General manager Walt Jocketty said Latos might be ready by the beginning of the season.

"It was a very quick repair," Jocketty said. "Very minor surgery."

Latos felt pain in the knee during one of his throws and an MRI revealed the tear.

"Is it unfortunate? Yeah," Jocketty said. "But it's not something we're overly concerned about."

Latos had bone chips removed from his pitching elbow at the end of last season. He finished 14-7 with a 3.16 ERA in 32 starts.

Also, pitchers Carlos Contreras and Daniel Corcino, and infielder Neftali Soto did not report to the first day of spring training because bad weather on the East Coast cancelled their flights.
