Cincinnati Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick faces surgery Wednesday on his dislocated right shoulder to repair torn cartilage. Ludwick was injured sliding into third base on Monday during the Reds' season-opening loss to the Angels. The team will place Ludwick on the 15-day disabled list, but it has yet to announce a timetable for his return. Ludwick, 34, hit .275 with 26 home runs and 80 RBI last season after slumping to a .237 average and 13 homers with Pittsburgh in 2011. He signed a two-year, $15 million contract during the offseason. Reserve outfielder Chris Heisey will take Ludwick's place in left. "I've done it before," Heisey said told MLB.com. "If that's what I'm called to do, I will show up and do it the best I can." Reds manager Dusty Baker will have to shuffle his batting order to replace Ludwick, the cleanup hitter. No. 2 hitter Brandon Phillips might be moved into that spot until Ludwick returns.
