Reds' Latos has Giants' number
If the San Francisco Giants were relieved they were scheduled to face Mat Latos just once in the NL Division Series, they're not relieved now.
The Reds right-hander was summoned as an emergency reliever and pitched four solid innings Saturday in Game 1, a 5-2 Cincinnati win, and now the Giants killer can pitch again.
Originally, he was to pitch Game 3.
Now he can pitch Game 4 or 5, if the series goes that far.
Bronson Arroyo goes Game 2 for the Reds, and Homer Bailey, fresh off a no-hitter, is the likely starter in Game 3.
The Giants have trouble hitting Latos, and it appeared odd that Latos originally was slated to pitch the third game, considering that would've been his only start in the series. Now that he can go twice, the Reds seem lined up nicely, especially with a 1-0 series lead.
The Giants recall Latos from 2010, when he pitched the San Diego Padres to a pair of 1-0 victories over Jonathan Sanchez. Sanchez bounced back to outpitch him in the 2010 finale, a San Francisco win that clinched the NL West title.
Overall in regular-season play, Latos has a 2.19 ERA and 0.89 walks-and-hits-per-inning-pitched ratio in 11 starts against the Giants and a 1.67 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in six starts at AT&T Park.
This year, he's 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA and 0.500 WHIP vs. San Francisco.
