Reds activate closer Chapman

The SportsXchange

The Cincinnati Reds activated closer Aroldis Chapman from the 15-day disabled list before Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies.

To make room for Chapman on the 25-man roster, the Reds optioned right-handed reliever Curtis Partch to Triple-A Louisville.

Chapman began the season on the DL after having surgery to repair damage to his left eye and nose. The left-hander was struck in the face by a line drive during a spring training game on March 19.

The left-handed Cuban has 38 saves in each of the last two seasons.

Jonathan Broxton has been serving as the Reds' closer in Chapman's absence. Once Chapman is eased back into ninth-inning duties, Broxton will return to a set-up role.

Partch was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 4 1/3 innings over three games with Cincinnati.
