CINCINNATI - Bronson Arroyo allowed one run on four hits in seven innings, and Brandon Phillips hit a two-run home run, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.

Logan Forsythe hit his fifth home run and Will Venable his 14th for San Diego.

Reds third baseman Todd Frazier emerged from his hitting slump to go 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, and he scored three times.

Padres starter Andrew Cashner (8-6) allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits over 107 pitches through five innings. The loss ended a personal three-game winning streak.

Phillips' 14th home run, on a 2-1 pitch from Tim Stauffer in the sixth, just cleared the left field wall and put Cincinnati ahead 7-1.

Arroyo (10-9) gave Forsythe's homer and a pair of singles by Chase Headley. Arroyo finished with seven strikeouts, tying a season-high.

Venable's solo home run off Alfredo Simon made the score 7-2 in the eighth.

Reds right-hander Jonathan Broxton, who came off the disabled list Wednesday, made his first appearance since June 13 and allowed one hit with one strikeout in the ninth.

Frazier doubled with one out in the first and scored on Joey Votto's single, putting the Reds ahead 1-0.

The Reds made it 3-0 in the third when Vitto had an RBI triple and Jay Bruce added a run-scoring double.

Arroyo retired the first nine batters he faced on just 34 pitches.

Headley, who singled with two outs in the fourth, was the Padres' first baserunner.

Forsythe's fifth home run with two outs in the fifth reduced the Padres' deficit to 3-1.

But Chris Heisey's RBI single drove home the Reds' fourth run. Heisey got to second on an error on the play and later scored when Forsythe made a wild throw after fielding Zack Cozart's ground ball, putting Cincinnati ahead 5-1.

NOTES: Frazier's first-inning double snapped an 0-for-31 streak. .. The Reds reinstated C Ryan Hanigan from the 15-day disabled list and placed C Corky Miller on the 15-day disabled list. Miller suffered a right quad contusion during a play at the plate on Wednesday. Hanigan had been on the DL since July 11 with a sprained left wrist. "It went longer than I thought, unfortunately," said Hanigan. "I feel pretty good now. Sometimes it takes longer to heal certain injuries."... Padres LF Carlos Quentin likely will be placed on the disabled list, but a final determination was expected after Friday's game. "His right knee hasn't responded well in the last week," said Padres manager Bud Black. Quentin hasn't played since tweaking the knee on July 30. .. Padres SS Everth Cabrera, suspended 50 games for PED use linked to the Biogenesis clinic, will spend time mentoring the club's Latin players. "He can be a great example for them," said Black. "He wants to take on a role as an educator."
