Red Wings RW Holmstrom to retire

The SportsXchange

Detroit Red Wings right wing Tomas Holmstrom is expected to announce his retirement before the start of the season, according to the Macomb Daily in Michigan.

In 15 seasons with the Redwings, Holmstrom, 39, scored 243 goals and played more than 1,000 games. He was a part of four Stanley Cup championships. He was best known for positioning himself in front of the opposing net and frustrating goalies.

Holmstrom played in his 1,000th game late last season and was only the sixth Red Wing to play that many games. He spent his entire career in Detroit.

Holmstrom had several knee injuries and two hernia surgeries over his career.

The Red Wings will likely turn to Gustav Nyqvist to step into a bigger role with Holmstrom retiring.
