Red Wings' Kronwall injured in first period

The SportsXchange

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall left the ice on a stretcher after he was pushed into the boards early in the first period of Thursday night's game against the Colorado Avalanche in Denver.

Kronwall's head slammed against the boards at 2:17 of the first period after a hit by Colorado's Cody McLeod, who received a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct.

Kronwall was down on the ice for several minutes while receiving attention from trainers before he was placed on a stretcher. He was responsive and moving his extremities.

Detroit general manager Ken Holland said during the first intermission Kronwall suffered a mild concussion but did not leave the arena. He also had cuts on his right ear.

"He hasn't gone to the hospital," Holland said. "I went down to the locker room; he was talking to the doctor. He was being evaluated. He was going through the sequence of events."

His status for Saturday is unknown.
