Red Sox's Bailey eyes Monday return
On the same day Boston Red Sox reliever Joel Hanrahan underwent Tommy John surgery, the team got positive news about another right-handed reliever.
Andrew Bailey will make a rehab appearance Saturday for Triple-A Pawtucket, and if all goes well, he'd be activated Monday for the Red Sox's series opener in Chicago against the White Sox.
Bailey has been out since April 29 due to right biceps inflammation. He figures to take over the closer role upon his return.
"I'm fine, so like I said, it's kind of getting into a game and facing live hitters and see where that goes and making sure you're able to execute pitches when you need to," Bailey said, according to WEEI.com. "Getting back baseball-wise, we just agreed to go one inning (in the minors), and I'll be fine."
Bailey was 1-0 with five saves and a 1.46 ERA in 13 appearances before he was injured. He had six saves for Boston in 2012 after averaging 25 per year in his first three major league seasons, all with the Oakland A's.
